The Basics of Leading and Following When Dancing

Dancing with a partner is always a fun experience! However, it is important to remember that one of you will be leading, while the other follows. Seeing as you will both have your own role out on the dance floor, you will want to make yourself aware of how you should be conducting your dancing.

Do you know what it means to lead and follow when dancing?

Here at Arthur Murray Dance Studio, we believe that everyone should be aware of how to best present themselves out on the dance floor. That’s why we have gathered some tips to assist you with knowing how to lead and follow when dancing. To discover some great insight, be sure to continue reading:

  • The Job Description. Whether you are a leader or a follower, you have a job to fulfil out on the dance floor.
    • The Leader. If you have chosen to lead when dancing, you will be in charge. You will guide your partner across the dance floor by communicating with patterns and movement.
    • The Follower. As a follower, you will be taking your partner’s lead by responding to their movement and signals when dancing.
  • The Myths. It is often perceived that if you are the leader, you are a better dancer. However, it takes just as much skill to follow someone’s movements as it does to lead them. Being a leader or a follower comes down to personal preference and has nothing to do with physique or how skilled you are out on the dance floor.
  • Determining Your Role. When you are paired with someone to dance with, you may both want to lead, or follow. Therefore, you will have to determine who will take on which role. Take into consideration your actions out on the dance floor, and how you communicate with one another, to assist you with making your decision. However, taking turns is also acceptable!

Leading and following out on the dance floor is a great way to build communication with your partner. These are just a few tips to assist you with getting to know the trade before hitting the dance floor.
