How to Improve Your Posture Through the Art of Dance

How to Improve Your Posture Through the Art of Dance

Posture is such an important part of life! With the correct posture, you can not only benefit your dancing skills, but your health. From sitting up straight to walking with confidence, posture plays a key role in how we present ourselves. So, it is only ideal that you consider improving yours.

There are many ways in which you can easily improve your posture, are you aware of what they are?

Here at Arthur Murray Dance Studio, we understand how important great posture is! That’s why we have gathered some ways in which you can improve yours through dance. Would you like to gain some insight? If so, continue reading to learn more:

  • Stretches. Most people think that the key to good posture is to just sit and stand up straight. However, know that proper stretches can aid in promoting great posture. First off, before you dance, you will take part in stretching as a way to loosen up your body. Stretches to consider, especially for dancers who slump forward, are chest and shoulder stretches. Squeeze your shoulder blades together without arching your back, and hold the position for 10 seconds.
  • Props and People. When dancing, you have the opportunity to use props, or dance with another person. Holding small items in your hands, such as little bean bags, can pose as a reminder to keep your arms straight when dancing. In addition, dancing with a partner will pose as a wonderful way to encourage one another to stand up straight and provide reminders when necessary.
  • Visualization. There is no better way to practice good posture then to be able to view your problem areas. When dancing, it would be ideal to do so in front of mirror. This way, you can see yourself perform and notice when you slouch or slump. So, consider dancing in front of a mirror, or with another person, as people can let you know if your posture is slacking.
  • Marilyn Monroe’s saying: “always act like you’re wearing an invisible crown”. If we took her advice we’d all have perfect posture holding our chin up and standing upright.
